Bright wins Championship Player of the Year Award

Ealing Trailfinders’ Mark Bright has been named The Rugby Professional Association’s Greene King IPA Championship Player of the Year for 2016-17.

The number 8 has captained the team on 25 of his 27 appearances this season and scored five tries. It is the first time that he has won the award having been twice nominated during his time at London Scottish.

Bright was up against Yorkshire Carnegie’s number 8 and captain Ryan Burrows and London Irish’s fly-half James Marshall and received the award at the RPA Awards Night at Battersea Evolution.

“I’m massively honoured to win this award,” Bright said. “It’s third time lucky for me, but I’m still very proud.”

Bright crossed Kew Bridge to sign on with Ealing Trailfinders from London Scottish in time for the 2016-17 season. While at the Exiles he featured in the Championship Dream Team for three seasons.

He was born in Nelson, on New Zealand’s southern island and having played for Marist he joined local ITM Cup side Tasman Makos. After moving to England he first played for Kendall and Redruth, where he won selection for Cornwall.

His performances in 2013-14 earned him a late call-up for England 7s squad that competed at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. He started five of England’s six matches in Glasgow and left Glasgow having helped England to success in the plate final.
